Dr. Liz Gustafson

Sometimes it can feel as if we have a tangled knot of thoughts and feelings trapped inside our minds.

I see the purpose of therapy as taking that tangled knot, smoothing it out, and holding it up to the light to gain clarity and peace.

Here to Help

For nearly 15 years, I have helped people through anxiety, depression, painful pasts, and challenging life situations. Together we can examine the underlying issues leading to suffering and identify specific steps that can be taken to feel better and resolve these challenges.

Many of the people I work with are artists, creatives, or entrepreneurs. We explore how unique professional and personal experiences intersect to create a complex life that benefits from intentionality to improve work-life balance and strengthen well-being.

I am also experienced in working with people with ADHD and supervise the ADHD assessments within the practice.

Therapeutic Technique

My style is collaborative. I share my understanding of your unique psychological processes to deepen your own understanding of who you are and what you need out of life. By working through the past and clarifying the needs of the present, we can help you reach a more fulfilling future.

I incorporate Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and mindfulness practices to personalize a treatment that meets your individual needs.

Professional Journey & Qualifications

I am a Clinical Psychologist licensed in California (PSY29510).

I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology and trained at some of the top hospitals in New York City and Los Angeles, including New York-Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell, Mount Sinai, and Kaiser Permanente.

As a doctoral-level clinician, I have completed the most extensive graduate training possible in psychological theory, practice, and research. I augment that training by regularly attending seminars and consulting with colleagues to stay updated on the best practices in the field.

Before opening Atwater Village Therapy, I spent two years taking calls and training operators at a suicide hotline. I went on to work with foster kids, 9/11 first responders, people struggling with mental health crises on a psychiatric inpatient unit, and low-income families in a community mental health clinic.

Since starting Atwater Village Therapy, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of therapy clients, and supervising and organizing training seminars for numerous clinicians.

Affirmative and Inclusive Practice

I am LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent affirming, and supportive of individuals in non-traditional relationship structures. I also have experience working with clients from a broad range of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
